Jacques looked apprehensive left alone with his boss, but nevertheless kept his professional face on. But he couldn't help muttering "I'm German too, you know."
At normal volume, he said "Bonjour, Dan- um, Herr Remmington." He put a bottle of maple syrup next to the rapidy diminishing stack of waffles. "And no, it was just a mix. Of course I can cook, but this isn't really cooking. You do understand, I would have prefered crepes-"
He stopped talking. The best thing to do under the circumstances, really.
"Meine Entschuldigungen. Would you like a waffle?"
He gestured at them.

When Alexandra walked up requesting napkins, Jacques swore. In French, and very quietly- he didn't want to bother Miss Alex. "Um, right." He rummaged in the cabinet where he had found the cutlery and pulled out a stack of napkins. Blushing at his foolishness, he handed one to Alexandra. "Very sorry, Miss Alex. But thank you for pointing that out."
